meeting reflection

We had a meeting of 3 students in room J12 on Tuesday 19^th March 2013 at 1:00pm. Rashed Alremeiti, H00247559, was chairman, Faris, H00202586 was the participant and I was the Secretary Abdulrahman Aljunaibi, H00237389.Rashed opened the meeting, which was to discuss the traffic in Abu Dhabi; Faris said that there are several causes of this problem when Rashed was describing the issue. Faris said that  one of the causes is there are a lot of cars in Abu Dhabi that go at one time, especially in the morning. Rashed and  I agreed about this point because when we wake up and go to the college we see that is one of the causes; everyone goes to work at one time. Also Faris mentioned small streets which cause a lot of accidents and will led to  traffic jams. I suggested that there is a solution to our problem such as, changing the existing roads. This has been done in a few roads, for example Zayed Bridge. In addition make people use public transport such as buses. For Mr.Hedley said there is now a huge difference between the quality of buses between 15 years ago and today. We shouldn’t focus just on buses; we have to build a metro in Abu Dhabi and that is one point of Abu Dhabi government strategy in 2020. Applying a Salik system in the main streets will be a solution to provide less traffic. We could have a subway station but Mr.Hedley said that will be costly and Abu Dhabi is an island. The effective solution Rashed and Faris agreed was applying a Salik system which will be useful because it will let people who don’t have Salik go to other roads. All agreed that a Salik system will be useful.

Rashed started and ended the meeting in a good way and he was an effective chairman. Faris was the participant and he was supportive. Mr Hedley was a good listener and he participated in some solutions to the problem. I was explaining some of the solutions. We all had a good understanding of the topic and it was a useful meeting

Changing the existing roads

This is has been done in a few roads, and it takes a long time to complete. It’s an efficient way though. We can increase the size of the streets that are common to have traffic in them every day. There are also some streets that are oversized, so we can try to decrease the size of a street, and increase another one.

Make people use public transport

We shouldn’t focus on just bringing buses. We have to build a metro in Abu Dhabi, just like the one in Dubai. It’s going to be able to get people to all places around the city. The more people use the metro, the less people on the road and so less traffic too.

Provide exclusive lanes for public transportation

As for the remaining buses, we shouldn’t sell them, but we should keep them and provide a lane that’s only for public transportation vehicles. If we don’t do that, public transportation vehicles will be roaming the street, and due to their big size they will block other cars and result in more traffic.

Provide Salik system in Abu Dhabi

Applying Salik system and bringing it to Abu Dhabi can be another solution for the traffic. Main roads of Abu Dhabi will require any car that goes through it to have a Salik card. Since Salik requires money, we can predict that fewer cars will be on that road.

1- Enlarging the roads is a good idea, but it’s going to take a long time to change every road.

2- Building a metro is a good idea and a fast way of travel. It costs lots of money and time.

3- The exclusive lanes for public transportation are related to enlarging the roads. This is going to cost a lot of money.

4- Applying strict rules like Salik can be a good way to ensure that fewer people will be going on the street in their cars.

Mubarak is 19 years old, studying in HCT Abu Dhabi Men’s College (Higher Colleges of Technology); his major is in the business department,specially accounting and he hopes that he will graduate after 3 years. He would like to work with ADWEA  (Abu Dhabi Water & Electricity Authority ) after graduating because he has a sponsorship from them.

Mubarak was interviewed by Mr. Hedley, Saeed and Hamad and he answered some questions. First of all Mr . Hedley asked him to talk about himself and Mubarak introduced himself well to us; after that first question was from Hamad “Can you work under pressure ? “ He said “ Yes, I can,for example in HCT I had many exams in the same week for 5 different subjects so I can handle it “.

The second question was would you like to work in our company ? Said Mubarak : “Yes because I have a scholarship in ADWEA and no negative issue in the company  “

In addition Saeed also asked Mubarak, what is your goal ? Mubark said “My goal is to get a degree and to be manager”. Hamad asked him” What is your greatest strength?” Mubarak answered “accounting, math “       

 

At the end of the interview Mubarak asked what are my benefits ? Mr. Hedley answered 
" Health insurance for you, your wife, and your children”
